Noah – 5767

Genesis 6: 18

But I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall enter the ark, with your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives.

Rashi:

But I will establish my covenant. A covenant with the fruit not to rot, and that the wicked people of the generation will not kill him.

Ibn Ezra:

But I will establish my covenant. This is a sign that God had sworn to Noah that during the flood, neither he nor his children would die even though it is not clearly written first. This is similar to what we find in Deuteronomy:  Then all of you came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead to spy out the land for us and bring back word on the route we shall follow and the cities we shall come to." [1:22]

Answers to last week’s questions:

1.      What problem in the verse is R. Mana addressing?

The grammar of the verse is wrong. It should read – it is not am empty thing for you.

2.      What idea is expressed in his explanation?

We should not hurry to blame others. Frequently, when things are wrong, it is our own fault.
