Exodus 29: 38

Now this is what you shall offer upon the altar: two yearling lambs each day, regularly.

Sefer Hachinuch: (Pinchas 401)

We were commanded to do this twice daily regular service, at sunrise and sunset, in order that through this activity we will be inspired to direct all our thoughts and feelings towards God. I have already said a number of times that a person is motivated and his nature is aroused by the actions he is engaged in. And therefore, since a person by nature needs to prepare food twice a day, morning and evening, he was commanded to engage in the service of his God also twice a day, so that the servant’s service to himself will not exceed his service to his master …

QUESTION

1.      What is the reason for the daily offering according to Sefer Hachinuch?

2.      Explain the underlined words.

ANSWER TO LAST WEEK’S QUESTIONS:

How do Rashi and Rashbam differ in their understanding of the word ‘Remember’?

Rashi: ‘Remember’ means ‘remind yourself. You must always keep the Sabbath in your mind. The command is in the present.

Rashbam. Remember’ means ‘Recall the past’. For Rashbam, the word remember always relates to something in the past, and therefore cannot actually be a commandment for now. We are commanded to sanctify the Sabbath day (in the present). We motivate ourselves to do this by remembering the creation of the world in the past.
