ANSWER
TO LAST WEEK’S QUESTIONS: How do Rashi and Rashbam differ in their understanding of the word ‘Remember’? Rashi: ‘Remember’ means ‘remind yourself. You must always
keep the Sabbath in your mind. The command is in the present. Rashbam. Remember’ means ‘Recall the past’. For Rashbam, the
word remember always relates to something in the past, and therefore cannot
actually be a commandment for now. We are commanded to sanctify the Sabbath
day (in the present). We motivate ourselves to do this by remembering the
creation of the world in the past. |
